How hail damages shingles
A hailstone hits a shingle and crushes the mat underneath. That leaves a soft bruise. The granules come loose and the asphalt is exposed to sun.
Bigger hail can crack the shingle or break the seal that holds it down. The roof may not leak right away. The damage shows up months later as leaks or blown-off shingles.
Signs of hail damage homeowners miss
Dark spots on shingles
Round marks where granules were knocked off. Hard to see from the ground.
Dented soft metals
Vents, pipe jacks, and flashing show dents more clearly than shingles do.
Granules in gutters
A sudden pile of granules after a storm points to impact damage.
Damage on one side only
Hail often comes in at an angle, so one side of the roof takes most of the hits.
